Christmas, I think, should not be discussed before the 5th of December. This may or may not be because my birthday is on the 4th…. But mulled wine is a winter, rather than a Christmas-specific drink, so here’s my recipe – enjoy!
2 bottles of red wine
1 orange, halved
8 whole cloves
1 lemon, halved
150g soft brown sugar
2 bay leaves, fresh or dried
2 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
100ml sloe or damson gin (optional)
Put all the ingredients except for the gin into a saucepan. Heat gently until the sugar is dissolved. Taste, and add more sugar or lemon if necessary. Take off the heat.
If you’re adding gin, stir it in now.
Strain and serve immediately; you can garnish with fresh cinnamon sticks to swizzle or sliced fruit if you wish.
